Julie Wolpers Internet Basics :: Julie Wolper
Internet Basics Julie Wolper's "Internet Basics" was originally offered by the Telecommunication Community Resource Center and represents a growing phenomena on the Web -- the free course. In fact, this is not so much a course as it is a self-directed tutorial, an outgrowth of the early guided learning modules that first appeared in PLATO and in early DOS and Macintosh programs. Wolper's work offers its users a brief guide to the Internet (along with an introduction written by Dan Duvall). It includes descriptions of such technologies as the Web, downloads, e-mail and newsgroups, a collection I found oddly conceived till I worked through the site: the technologies chosen all fit within her stated vision of the Internet: ". . . a network of linked computers allowing participants to share information on those computers." Given that understanding and conceptualization of the Internet (and it's one that is certainly defensible, if not one that is rapidly becoming the standard), her choices make perfect sense. And her information is very down to earth, succinct and accurate; her brief summation of the history of the Internet, for instance, is right on the button, and useful for helping new users begin to think about the issues involved in using and being part of the Web. Though the site is decidedly kinesthetic in its approach -- users are often enjoined to "try" this and links take them to places where the technology they've just installed can be used. But the instructions can often be mercilessly brief and I wonder if newcomers could hope to follow them without more step by step instruction: Set up a "downloads" area: The first step here is to create a new folder or directory on your hard drive entitled, simply, "downloads." This file can reside anywhere you like. I keep mine on the "desktop" where I can easily find the new things I get. Some people also find it helpful to put the "download" directory at the root level of their c: drive. How many new time users are guaranteed to know how to create a folder at all, let alone locate it on their desktop? Admitted, knowing how to create a folder is not strictly speaking part of the content of a course about using online technology, but it's certainly germane.

Animal Testing Essay -- essays research papers
Biology and Behavior Animal testing is not a problem in todayââ¬â¢s society because it is beneficial to humans. It seems unethical to put animals through such pain and torture, but if we stopped it completely there would be a large amount of human lives lost. How could this be? The further advancements in medical and technological science is inevitable. Therefore, if the testing must be done to learn more about the brain and body, which species (animals or man) seems expendable for such testing. The real question is which species is more ethical to test on. For example, a rat is given an injection with a drug and watched regularly for the period of a month. At the end of the month the rat is injected with a lethal toxin and dissected for scientific reasons. The purpose of the experiment is to determine whether or not the regular use of the drug would have any type of an effect on the brain of the rat. In contrast there is a man age 23 that has consented to be used for the same experiment. It not only would be unethical but against the law to try an experiment of this nature on a man. The end result would be the death of a perfectly healthy human. Which circumstance now seems unethical? One could also take in to consideration that the humanââ¬â¢s death could have an impact on his family as well as the people that knew him. Above all the question of whether or not animal testing is ethical or not, really boils down to the purpose of the testing and whether or not it is a legitimate cause. Every man and woman has benefited from animal testing in one form or another. Most of what we know about the brain and body is a direct result of animal testing. Only in recent history have there been advancements in technology in both the fields of medicine, and science that have made it possible to see in side the human body. Unfortunately this still is not enough. The testing must be done on a living organism. Depending on the type and purpose of the test, the organism (man or animal) must be observed carefully and monitored for changes in behavior, health, and in some cases life or death. There are unpredictable reactions that occur in the body of living organisms when an alienable substance enters the blood stream. That is why animal testing is necessary. For instance, a computer can not determine whether or not a certain prototype vaccine will have a beneficial or cata... ...ake and convulse on the floor, the last thing left to do is throw his body in a burning fire, and go pick the next runner up for the experiment. Obviously, no matter how this is viewed it is murder. Even though animal testing is said to be beneficial to humans, many times the animals are used for other purposes. According to an online article posted by a company known as the Nature of Wellness, "Horrifying chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, possessed by an ever-increasing number of countries are tested on animals the same way a drug, detergent, or toothpaste is tested on animals. Conventional weapons of all sorts are also tested in vivisectionist laboratories, where animals are routinely used as surrogates for man in warlike situations" ("Animal Experimentation: No Lie Can Live Forever." 1996). With such a misuse of the terrible act of animal testing, just goes to show that something must be done. There is no way to guarantee the safety and proper test ing of the animals in a way that only is beneficial to mankind. There will always be someone out there trying to scheme up a crazy invention or harmful agent, and the only thing that suffers is the animals

Chewing Gum
Assalamualaikum and a very good morning to my fellow friends and Madam Nurma. Before I begin my speech, I would like to ask my lovely audience in front of me, have you ever found yourself in a situation where your hair is stuck with bubble gum and you accidentally step on a chewing gum? These situations can be really annoying right? So I decided to study a little about this little critter that everyone thought as a nuisance. Chewing gum was invented in the late 1800ââ¬â¢s and we have the Alamo to thank. Thatââ¬â¢s right. .. Remember the Alamo? After General Lopez de Santa Anna lost the Alamo to the Americans, he figured that he could sell the Americans enough Chicle to raise an army to take back his power in Mexico. Santa Anna teamed up with an American inventor Thomas Adams who tried unsuccessfully to turn chicle into a new rubber for tires. Adams later figured out that with added flavour, chicle was an enjoyable substance to chew and could be sold for little money but big prof it to children. He opened the first gum factory in 1871. And by the 1880ââ¬â¢s, the entire United States was stuck on chewing gum.Two other Americans are responsible for the popularity of chewing gum around the world. The first is another inventor, Walter Dimer. According to the book Pop, it is Dimer who dreamed of blowing bubbles with chewing gum. He invented a gum that had the texture that makes blowing bubbles possible. In 1928, the invention of bubble gum catapulted the popularity of chewing gum. The other American responsible for solidifying the popularity of chewing gum is Wrigley, who used advertisement to popularize gum. However, during WWII, the Wrigley Company heard that soldiers used their gum to overcome dry mouths on the battlefield. Wrigley pulled all of its gum off the shelves and donated them to the war effort. Americans returned victorious and after the war it was an everyday event to chew gum. Now that the history is unwrapped, we should chew on the importance of gum. According to the American Dental Association, chewing gum produces more saliva which helps to neutralize acids in your stomach as foods break down and can actually help prevent the breaking down of tooth enamel. As you chew your gum, more saliva enters your mouth and the more likely you are to wash away the bacteria that aids in tooth decay. Chewing sugarless gum for just twenty minutes after eating can help prevent tooth decay and can save the enamel on your teeth. Although this is no substitute to brushing and flossing, studies still prove that chewing sugar less gum can greatly help prevent cavities. In addition to giving you a healthier smile, another reason your teachers should let you chew gum in school is because it boosts skills.According to the Los Angeles Times from April 2009, chewing gum has been proven to boost academic performance. In one study, researchers asked one group of teenaged students to chew sugar-free gum while participating in math class. They had a co ntrol group not chew gum during the same class. They found that those who chewed gum on average showed a three percent better increase on a standardized math. The study claims that chewing gum helped the subjects concentrate and stay focused.. And when gum isnââ¬â¢t helping you concentrate on school work, it can help you relieve the pain in your ear on plane rides.According to research done by CNN, the stress exerted on your eardrum when a plane is either climbing or descending, can be improved by chewing gum which corrects the difference in air pressure and eases the pain. Again, chewing causes your mouth to produce extra saliva, and that saliva needs to be swallowed. It is the swallowing that helps equalize the pressure in your ears. Not only does chewing gum produce more saliva, but it can trick your stomach into thinking you are eating. According to the August 26, 2008 New York Times, doctors are prescribing chewing gum after abdominal surgery. After stomach surgery, eating fo od can cause nausea and vomiting. In order for your stomach to heal, it needs hormones that are released when you eat. The answer to this dilemma: chewing gum. Patients chew gum, which stimulates the gut and produces gastrointestinal hormones. Gum tricks your stomach into thinking you are eating without having to eat. As we can see, gum has been with us for a long time and will continue to evolve to stay relevant in our lives. Today, we unwrapped the history of gum and we chewed on its benefits. Chewing gum is actually a fun thing to do. Assalamualaikum and thank you for your kind attention. . Chewing Gum Assalamualaikum and a very good morning to my fellow friends and Madam Nurma. Choose one of the specifeic food u like, make an argument, and write about it - Essay Example In that context, it may sound strange, but canned and frozen foods and vegetables are a veritable source of nutrition, which satisfy a range of consumer choices and expectations. Though canned and frozen foods and vegetables happen to be processed foods, yet the good thing is that they provide people with the much needed nutrition, in a safe, convenient and cost effective manner, while complying with the environmental norms and criteria. The one amazing thing about canned and frozen foods and vegetables is that they have a high nutrition value and content (Belasco 57). It is a fact that fresh foods like fruits and vegetables do lose much nutrition during transit to the stores. In contrast, the canned and frozen foods and vegetables are processed when the food items are still fresh and thereby have a high nutrition value. The processing of fruits and vegetables resorts to an array of traditional activities like peeling and cutting and the subsequent boiling or freezing of the available fresh foods. Thereby, once the fresh fruits and vegetables are canned or frozen, their nutrition potential gets preserved and remains intact for a long period of time. The consumers can consume these canned and frozen foods while benefiting from their high nutrition value. Going by the hectic schedules and scarcity of time that the contemporary consumers have to contend with, canned and frozen foods and vegetables are indeed convenient and save on time (Belasco 70). Canned and frozen foods do save on time in the sense that they are cut, peeled and cooked in advance, and can thereby be readily consumed without resorting to any elaborate processing or cooking procedure. The same cannot be said of the fresh foods, vegetables and fruits. Besides, canned and frozen foods and vegetables are also convenient as they allow the consumers an

Project management Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 4750 words
Project management - Essay Example According to results of Belbin profiles, each member is allocated within different teams by an adviser. In terms of our team, it had a rudimentary knowledge of function through the team balance sheet. There were nine kinds of roles in the Belbin profiles. Our team covered eight of these roles. Most of our members tended to be teamworkers. Coordinators, monitors evaluators, implementers, completer finishers and specialists totaled two individuals. The plant and resource investigator both were represented by a single team member. There was no shaper in our team. In fact, there was a good group atmosphere in our team in the initial stage. Specifically, there were no conflicts. Each member was more likely to agree with other memberââ¬â¢s idea and keep his/her own idea from becoming contentious. Each member was more likely to be a yes man in initial stage. There were two reasons which made our team better in the situation. One was the allocation role within the group. This affected mem bers cooperation. Belbin (1989) gave some pointers on this issue when he stated that the shaper and teamworker were an unlikely combination; but he implied that the chairman and teamworker were a combination which would, probably, be found together. Another interesting aspect is the relationships that were exhibited between team members. Because each member had met each other, members were more likely to make a good impression on one another in subsequent meetings. However, too warm of a group atmosphere can bring some negative influences on the team. We found that although we had a good group atmosphere, performance of our team was inefficient in the initial stage. This was because our team lacked a shaper and most of members were teamworkers; this led to our team sometimes being indecisive and the pressure and dynamic of our team was not enough. Therefore, some members had to make some change in order to enhance

Windows Server Deployment Proposal Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Windows Server Deployment Proposal - Assignment Example In addition, it also proposes a File and Sharing system that is suitable for a firm that is growing such as Worldwide Inc. The Windows Server 2012 is characterized by a wide range of new features ranging from much improved storage, wider chances for networking and more remote access. Moreover, it is characterized by a server administration characteristics all of which come together to significantly enhance on the functionality of this operating system. Many of these features especially in the area of storage could be of distinct help to Worldwide Inc especially because it deals with advertising that requires a great deal of storage (Tulloch, 2014). Throughout the serverââ¬â¢s infrastructure, Windowââ¬â¢s Server 2012 with Hyper V will be used and will be secured using a secure tunnel since it will provide support for the work done at Worldwide Inc. Moreover, Hyper-V will present the chance for the company to take full advantage of the servers it already has while at the same time enabling it to take full advantage of the new technology on the hardware for virtualization (Tulloch, 2014). Considering the fact that when making the decision to design and select the system specifications for a new solution of a server, it is important to consider that even the most optimal requirements for the system from Microsoft might not be requisite. In this regard, an assessment of the specifications of the planned server role while at the same time taking the load during the time that the deployment will be carried out since this will also take the growth of the firm into consideration (Finn et al, 2013). The table below shows the requi rements for deployment of Windows 2012. There are only two editions available within Windows server 2012; Standard and Datacenter with each of the editions supporting a Server Core version. It is recommended that a new installation be carried out as opposed to upgrading on the companyââ¬â¢s already existing server. Installing a new
